Configuring Outlook 2000

  1. Start your Outlook 2000 program.
  2. Click on Tools in the strip menu at the top of the window.
  3. Click on Services from the Tools drop down menu.
  4. Click on the Services tab in the Services window that appears.
  5. Click on the Add button.
  6. Select Internet E-mail in the Available information services window that appears and then click on the OK button.
  7. Click on the General tab in the Properties window that appears.
  8. You will be prompted to "Type the name by which you would like to refer to these servers...". Enter your new email address in this field.
  9. Enter your name in the "Name:" field.
  10. Enter your organization's name in the "Organization:" field.
  11. Enter your new email address again in the "E-mail address:" field (ie. username@yourdomain.com). You can actually enter an alias name here if you would like to use it instead (ie. anyname@yourname.com), but ensure that the email alias already exists or you won't receive any replies.
  12. Click on the Servers tab in the Properties window.
  13. Enter your POP3 server and SMTP server in the appropriate boxes. This information was included in your setup letter. If your ISP has a firewall preventing you from using other provider's SMTP server, you will want to enter your ISP's SMTP server in the SMTP server field. Prodigy, Mindspring, Earthlink, and many other ISP's have firewalls up. Ask your ISP technical support representative if you're unsure, or experience problems.
  14. Enter the email username and password that you specified when you created the email account. The username must be entered in email address format (See the figure below!). You can go ahead and check the "Remember password" option, but do not check the "Log on using Secure Password Authentication".
  15. Click on the OK button in the Properties window to close it and finish.

You will probably see a screen that says "The service you have just added will not start until you choose Exit and Log Off on the File menu, and then restart Microsoft Outlook." Just click on the OK button and then you will need to do what it says in order to use the new account.

If for some reason, you don't see the option to add an Internet E-mail account in Outlook 2000, you may have not enabled Outlook to use E-mail. To correct this, do the following.

  1. Click on Tools in the strip menu at the top of the window.
  2. Click on Options from the Tools drop down menu.
  3. Click on the Mail Services (Mail Delivery in some versions) tab in the Options window that appears.
  4. Click on the Reconfigure Mail Support... button.
  5. In the Outlook 2000 Startup and E-mail Service Options window that appears, check the radio button for either Internet Only, or Corporate or Workgroup, depending on how you will be using your email.
  6. Click on the Next button and follow the prompts to create your first email account above.
